Our Review of Picturized Recipes Cookies Cookbook

We spend a lot of time in our kitchen. It is the hub of our home.  I love to cook and I’ve always tried to include my kids as much as possible.  But sometimes it’s a hassle to have little hands all over the kitchen.  You know what I mean…spills to clean up, repeating instructions 20 times, sneezing on the cookies (oh…that’s a gem of a story).  I’ve discovered a new way to give my little one more independence and confidence in the kitchen.  It’s called Picturized Recipes.

You’ll Love This Cookbook!

Picturized Recipes Cookies Cookbook is a collection of 7 cookie recipes that your little ones (and big ones in my case) will love to bake.  I was gifted this Cookbook by my friend Caroline at PicturizedRecipes.com, but these are my own opinions and experiences with them.  I am admittedly bad at baking, so these image filled recipes are great for me as well.  Each recipe is divided into three sections:

  • Ingredients
  • Tools
  • Steps

Images are used for each ingredient, tool, and step that are easy for your kids to follow.  You can give more responsibility and independence as the age of your child allows.

We started out making the Peanut Butter Cookies.  You can see our steps below:

The Ingredients

Each of the 7 DELICIOUS recipes begins with a list of ingredients.  I love how the images helped my son find the ingredients by himself.  My Bud is 6 now, so he is reading some, but the pictures helped him connect the words with the ingredient.  This method strengthens word recognition by teaching to use context clues from the pictures.

For the Peanut Butter Cookies, the ingredients were simple.

  • Peanut Butter
  • Sugar
  • Egg

The Tools

The images of the tools helped my Bud to find everything he needed.  Of course, Mama had to help, but he felt confident telling me what to get.  I took the role of the assistant, or sioux chef if you’re a Ratatouille fan.

Not many tools were required for these simple cookies.  You can click on each tool below to see my favorites on Amazon.

I’m a sucker for some good kitchen tools.  You can check out all of my favorite tools in my Kitchen Essentials post.

The Steps

1. Preheat the Oven

The Steps are just as easy to follow as the ingredients and tools.  My Bud used his stepstool to reach everything, including the oven buttons.  He was so proud to set the temp on the oven.  For younger kids, this is a fun activity for number recognition.  I’m always looking for ways to toss in some math and science.

This is also a good opportunity to talk about safety in the kitchen.

2. Measure the ingredients

The images are super handy for these steps.  Although my Bud can read some, he still enjoyed looking at the pictures to make sure he was doing the right thing in the right order.  And here’s another opportunity for number fluency.  Math is fun y’all, not scary!

I love how the steps are separated and not just in a big list.  This makes it easy for little ones to follow along.

You could let your little one mark off the steps as you go.

3. Combine All Ingredients

Yes, it can be a bit messy to let the kids spoon peanut butter and crack eggs, but they are learning valuable skills.  And teaching them to clean up is just as important.

4. Mix Well

Your kiddo may need a little help getting this one started.  My Mr. Independent did NOT want any help because he has strong muscles and can do it by himself  😉

5. Spoon Onto Cookie Sheet

My Bud used a tablespoon to scoop out the dough.

6. Spread Out On Cookie Sheet

Make sure there is enough space between the cookies, unless you want one big cookie.  I showed my Bud how to roll the dough into balls and space them out.  We probably could have left even more space between these cookies.

I absolutely love my Silpat silicone baking mat. It makes cleanup a breeze and keeps my cookies from sticking.

7. Bake for 20 Minutes

Waiting for 20 minutes to pass can be excruciating.  Plan something fun to do during this time to help it pass more quickly.  Or start on your next batch of cookies 🙂

8. Let Cool and Enjoy!

Just as excruciating is waiting for the cookies to cool! But don’t skip this step!  Letting the cookies cool allows the bottoms of the cookies to firm up a bit.  If you try to move the cookies too soon, they will crumble.

The Cleanup

Yes, my Life Between the Dishes involves a lot of sink time, but this is one of those times that I look at the dirty dishes in the sink and feel so much gratitude.  And we had delicious cookies to snack on and share with our family.

Next on the List: Oatmeal Cranberry Cookies

My Bud had so much fun, he wanted to bake more cookies.  This time my Goose got involved.  She’s 15 and took control of baking these cookies.  Even at 15, she loved the way the Picturized Recipe was so easy to follow.

These were so delicious!  We took them to our family Christmas gathering and they were a hit.  So good, in fact, that they made it on the plate for Santa. Santa said he loved them 🙂
