1. The Kingdom of Wrenly

Prince Lucas and his best friend Clara find adventures The Kingdom of Wrenly.  Set in a time when candles were light sources and knights protected the lands, The Kingdom of Wrenly series provides exciting stories with just enough magic, mythical creatures, adventure, and friendship to keep a young reader entertained.  Some of the books contain some scary stuff with ghosts, monsters, and intense adventures but I believe that is part of the appeal. As of today, there are 17 books in the series with numbers 18 and 19 planned to be released soon.

2. Super Turbo

Super Turbo is no ordinary classroom pet hamster. In a 2nd grade classroom at Sunnyview Elementary School, he is class pet by day and superpet by night. He is one of a group of the Superpet Superhero League, a group of classroom pets who protect the school after the bell rings. Super Turbo is funny and entertaining with action and sometimes a little mystery as we see the classroom from the classroom pet’s point of view. There are 9 books in the series that will keep you entertained for many hours.

3. Here’s Hank

Hank is a young boy who struggles with dyslexia.  The original series, Hank Zipzer, follows Hank as he moves to middle school.  The books were written by Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver.  The stories are based on Mr. Winkler’s struggles as a student with learning differences.

The newer series is meant for younger kids. Here’s Hank introduces Hank as an elementary school student. We see the struggles of a child with learning differences.  It’s easy for kids to relate to his stories. They are entertaining but create an empathetic attitude. There are 12 books in the series.

4. Pocket Pirates

The Pocket Pirates series had me laughing out loud.  I was sad that there were only 4 books in the series.

The pocket pirates live in a ship in a bottle in an antique shop.  They are tiny and go on adventures battling mice, insects, and the owner’s dog. What could go wrong?  Pretty much everything!

5. Mr. Popper’s Penguins

Mr. Popper’s Penguins is one my son wants to read over and over.  If you’ve seen the movie, you may have an idea about the book.

The book was first published in 1938 but is entertaining and holds the attention of young readers.

The penguins are funny and the story follows the family as they get their first penguin, grow their penguin family, and take them on the road as a traveling show.

6. Dr. Dolittle

We’ve read three of the Dr. Dolittle books. The first Dr. Dolittle book was published in 1920. There are 12 Dr. Dolittle books. The author, Hugh Loftin, began writing stories about a fictional character named Dr. Dolittle while he was in WWI. He wanted a way to write to his kids without talking about the horrific war.

The stories begin in 1839 in England.  Some words were unfamiliar to me, having been written in the 1920s in England.  It is fun to look up the meanings of unfamiliar words with my son.  This book definitely expanded his vocabulary.

As I read them aloud, some of the stories had to be censored.  There are parts about murder, cannibalism, killing animals, and wars that may be a bit too dramatic for young kids.

All in all, we enjoyed the Dr. Dolittle books.  These books are perfect if you want a story that will last a while.

7. Snazzy Cat Capers

Snazzy Cat Capers features Ophelia von Hairball V, the best cat burglar in the world.  With a whole lot of sass and class, Ophelia always shows her patience even when nothing is going her way.  There are only 3 books in the series but they are worth reading.

8. The Alien Next Door

There are 8 books in this series, The Alien Next Door.

Harris has a new neighbor, Zeke, and suspects him of being an alien.  His best friend Roxy just thinks he is jealous of the new kid and wants attention.

Zeke reveals himself to Harris after they start hanging out and get to know each other a little better. The adventures are funny as Zeke misunderstands many human traditions like Halloween and camping.

9. Isle of Misfits

In Isle of Misfits, A gargoyle is recruited to attend a special school for misfit monsters.  They then go on missions to help other magical creatures solve problems.  It’s a great series about teamwork and loving yourself even if you’re different. There are 4 books in the series and can be found in 1 book! These stories were shorter than some books.

10. What Should Danny Do?

The What Should Danny Do? books aren’t really chapter books, but they are fun to read.  The reader is presented with choices to make for Danny throughout the story. Each choice leads to another part of the story.  There are 9 possible endings in 2 of the books and 8 in the third book.

It’s fun to try to make the choices that will lead to each different ending.  The stories show your choices determine the outcome of your day and always have consequences, good or bad.

There are three books in the series for a total of 26 different endings!

There is also another book called What Should Darla Do? but we haven’t read that one yet.

Which are you going to read next?

My tutoring students LOVE Super Turbo and the partner series, Captain Awesome. Such a great introduction to chapter books with loads of pictures and not so scary, easily decodable words.
